This design study focused on the modernization of a post-war mid-century cottage while preserving its charm and character. The residence enjoys fabulous views of Puget Sound from a high perch, and favorable southwest exposure.
A completely new roof structure added vaulted ceilings to the main level and protective eaves to the exterior walls. The main floor layout was reimagined to open spaces to one another, increasing the volumes added by the vaulted ceiling. A generous master suite was crafted from the space of several former small rooms.
The basement floor level was lowered to provide relief from a cramped ceiling, making this entire level a usable space for an additional bedroom, media room, art studio and laundry. This effectively doubled the usable square footage of the residence.
The exterior facade was preserved, with improvements restrained to patio and entrance details, and minor grade changes enabling gracious yard expansions. Truly a new lease on life for this lovely treasure!
